New York Knicks Preview

Game 1 was everything Madison Square Garden was built for. Brunson finished with 38 points after spending most of the game going nowhere he was 2-for-11 from the field with 14 points through three quarters as the Knicks trailed by 22 with under eight minutes to play. 

Then something shifted. He relentlessly attacked Harden in the pick-and-roll to spark an 18-1 run and tied it at 101 on a banked layup with 19 seconds left. The Knicks then opened overtime with a 9-0 run and the building lost its mind. Bridges added 18 points on 5-of-7 shooting. 

Anunoby, who returned from a strained right hamstring, hit two free throws in overtime and a corner three late that stretched the lead back out, finishing with 13. 

In Game 2 the Knicks need a cleaner 48 minutes, not just the final eight. The Knicks shot just 10.5% from three through three quarters before the comeback ignited; they could not keep banking on fourth-quarter eruptions against a Cavaliers team that had them buried. 

Brunson at 32-36 points with more aggressive early scoring rather than waiting for the game to come to him is the standard this team needs. Towns was quiet in Game 1 expect him to demand the ball early in Game 2 with Anunoby and Bridges as his relief valves. 

If he gets 26-30 points with physical post presence before Mobley can set his footing, the Knicks do not need a comeback at all. Anunoby's first made basket of the entire night was a corner three in the fourth quarter that needs to be corrected from the opening tip in Game 2, where his 18 points in the Atlanta closeout showed what he is capable of when healthy and assertive.

The Knicks on average, score 119.9 points per game, they score 51.4% from the field and are ranked 1st in the league, and 39.9% from the arc and are ranked 1st in the league. The Knicks grab 44.9 rebounds per game and ranked 4th in the season.

Cleveland Cavaliers Preview

Game 1 was the most painful loss of an entire postseason full of painful losses. The Cavaliers led 93-71 with 7:52 to play and shot 22% over the rest of the game their largest blown lead in franchise postseason history. 

Mitchell led with 29 points on 12-of-23 shooting but went cold at exactly the wrong moment, and the team was outscored 44-11 in the final 7:40 and overtime combined. Bridges made it a one-possession game with a corner three with 1:15 left, then Landry Shamet tied it. 

Merrill had a look at the game-winner at the buzzer and was off the mark. The Cavaliers did not lose because they played badly. They lost because Brunson found another gear nobody had a defence for and MSG became impossible to play in.

Mitchell and Harden have not yet played a complete game simultaneously in these playoffs one has stepped up when the other was quiet in virtually every win. In Game 2 on the road, they need both to be present and decisive for a full four quarters. 

Mitchell at 32-36 points with more aggression on the rim rather than pulling up from deep he went 12-of-23 but too many of those were step-back threes when he could have drawn free throws is what a Game 2 bounce-back looks like. 

Harden at 22-26 points with cleaner ball-handling is the other piece he hit two late threes in the comeback period but disappeared for long stretches before that. 

Mobley averaged 15.4 points per game head-to-head against Anunoby in their previous meetings this season and his mid-range pull-up over smaller Knicks defenders has been reliable all postseason expect 18-22 from him if he is aggressive in the short corner early. 

Strus found a late three in overtime but went cold otherwise his six-three Game 5 against Detroit feels like a very distant memory now.

The Cavaliers on average score 109.9 points per game, they score 46% from the field and are ranked 6th in the league, and 33.9% from the arc and are ranked 8th in the league. The Cavaliers grab 41.9 rebounds per game and ranked 6th in season.
