San Antonio Spurs Preview

Game 1 was the Spurs at their most vulnerable and most revealing simultaneously. Wembanyama shot 6-of-21 from the field for 26 points and 12 rebounds in his NBA Finals debut a number that flatters neither the efficiency nor the impact. 

San Antonio led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter before New York's suffocating fourth-quarter defence held them to just 14 points in the final period, their worst single-quarter output of the entire postseason. Castle scored 17, Champagnie and Harper each had 16 — the supporting cast was present and productive. It was Wembanyama's 6-of-21 shooting that ultimately cost them the game.

The correction for Game 2 is as clear as it gets. Wembanyama cannot keep settling for contested jumpers over Anunoby's outstretched arms — he needs to go to the rim early, draw contact, and get to the line in the way he did during the Thunder series when he was at his most dominant. 

He averaged 24.7 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks across three regular-season meetings with New York a 6-of-21 shooting night in the Finals is not who he is, and the most dangerous version of him that appeared in Game 4 against OKC will surface when the stakes are this high at home. Expect him in the 30-34 range with a post-first approach that forces Anunoby to commit to the body rather than the ball. 

Castle at 22-26 points is the expectation; his 17 in Game 1 was productive but too passive in the fourth quarter, and the Spurs need him attacking Brunson's sore knee in pick-and-roll rather than waiting for the offence to come to him. Fox and Harper's pace in transition was the one weapon San Antonio did not fully deploy in Game 1. If they push the tempo before New York's defensive structure sets, the Knicks' fourth-quarter dominance becomes harder to replicate.

The Spurs on average score 114.2 points per game they score 46.3% from the field and are ranked 5th in the league, and 35.8% from the arc and are ranked 5th in the league. The Spurs grab 47.6 rebounds per game and Ranked 1st in season.

New York Knicks Preview

Game 1 was pure Brunson, the NBA Finals version of the fourth-quarter hero nobody wanted to bet against. He scored 13 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter alone, including a corner three with 1:02 left that gave the Knicks a 97-95 lead and a falling-away pull-up jumper with 38 seconds left that iced the game at 101-95. New York closed on an 11-0 run, holding San Antonio to just 14 points in the final period. 

Anunoby added 17 points, Towns posted 18 points and 12 rebounds, and the Knicks' starting five looked composed and controlled despite being on the road against the best home crowd in the West. All of that while Brunson was playing through a knee and ankle issue that had him visibly limping in the second quarter. 

The Brunson health question is the defining storyline heading into Game 2. Playing through pain and delivering 30 points is remarkable; playing through pain for a second consecutive game against a Spurs team desperate to even the series is an entirely different ask. If he is anywhere near 100%, the Knicks are the most dangerous team in the building. Expect 26-30 from him with the same fourth-quarter composure that has defined every close game in this postseason. 

Towns at 22-26 points is the next requirement; his 18-and-12 in Game 1 was the efficient, quiet version of him, and with Wembanyama forced to help more on Brunson in the fourth quarter, Towns' pick-and-pop threes became unstoppable. 

Anunoby's 17 points included three threes and his ability to shoot above 56% from three this postseason while defending Wembanyama is what makes the Knicks' system so difficult to gameplan against. If both Towns and Anunoby produce simultaneously with Brunson facilitating, New York's offence can sustain itself through any defensive adjustment San Antonio makes. 

The Knicks on average, score 118.9 points per game, they score 50.7% from the field and are ranked 1st in the league, and 39.3% from the arc and are ranked 1st in the league. The Knicks grab 45.3 rebounds per game and ranked 4th in the season.
