FC Goa vs Chennaiyin FC Match Prediction & Analysis
In the second game of the opening day of the Indian Super League (ISL), FC Goa will host Chennaiyin FC. The sides met just once last season due to the truncated campaign, with the fixture in Chennai ending in a stalemate.
FC Goa have historically enjoyed the upper hand in this matchup and will fancy their chances again, but both teams will be eager for a better campaign this time around. That is especially true for Chennaiyin, who narrowly avoided relegation last season.
Head-to-head Record: FC Goa have held the upper hand in the rivalry, winning 16 of 29 matches played between the teams in the ISL with nine defeats and four draws.
Teams Preview
FC Goa Preview
FC Goa entered last season as AIFF Super Cup champions and runners-up in the previous ISL campaign, raising expectations of another strong title challenge. Instead, they endured a disappointing season, finishing seventh with five wins, five draws and three defeats. Two of those losses came in their final three games, while they went winless in their last three, eventually finishing six points behind the champions.
Dejan Drazic was their standout performer with nine goal contributions (6G+3A), but the Gaurs will need a new talisman after his move to Mohun Bagan. Brison Fernandes, Boris Singh, Ayush Chhetri and goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari have also departed.
FC Goa have responded by bringing in Chiki, Franchu, Jorge Ortiz, Isak Vanlalruatfela and Alex Vellejo, with Ortiz a familiar face who previously contributed over 20 goals and assists for the club. Gouramangi Singh has now taken charge as head coach and already oversaw the team in their AFC Champions League 2 qualifier.
FC Goa Probable XI - Lara Sharma (GK); Aakash Sangwan, Sandesh Jhingan, Álex Zalaya, Saveme Tariang, Álex Vallejo, Tomba Singh, Jorge Ortiz, Franchu, Isak Vanlalruatfela, Chiki
Chennaiyin FC Preview
Two-time ISL champions Chennaiyin FC enter another season hoping to regain their lost glory. The club have not come close to lifting the trophy since finishing runners-up in 2019-20, while the last two campaigns have been particularly disappointing, with both ending in the bottom half.
Last season was their lowest point yet as they narrowly avoided relegation, finishing above Mohammedan SC with just nine points from two wins, three draws and eight defeats. They also scored only nine goals, the lowest tally in the league.
A major squad overhaul has followed, with around 15 new signings arriving after several departures, including top scorer Daniel Chukwu. Brison Fernandes, Glen Martins and Ayush Chhetri have joined from FC Goa, while Madih Talal, the league's leading assist provider in the 2023-25 season, Nuno Reis and Dippendu Biswas are among the other players to watch.
Meanwhile, Clifford Miranda remains in charge, but after last season's struggles, he will know a significant improvement is needed to keep his job.
Chennaiyin Probable XI - Mohammad Nawaz (GK) ; Pritam Kotal Nuno Reis, Emmanuel Imanishimwe, Vignesh Dakshinamurthy, Glan Martins, Ayush Chhetri, Brison Fernandes, Madih Talal, Bryce Miranda, Ramon Tanque
FC GOA vs CHENNAIYIN FC
Winning PredictionFC Goa head into the opener winless in their last three ISL games, including two defeats, but they have had valuable competitive preparation ahead of the new season. The Gaurs recently featured in the AFC Champions League 2 qualifier against Arkadag and reportedly also beat Chennaiyin in a September friendly, although they enter this game on the back of a defeat to Dempo.
Chennaiyin, meanwhile, have had limited game time and are winless in their last five ISL matches (L4 D1). However, this is a revamped side with little connection to last season's struggles. While the outcome remains difficult to call, Goa's stronger competitive preparation gives them a slight edge.
