Kannur Warriors FC vs Thrissur Magic FC Match Prediction & Analysis
Season three of the Super League Kerala gets underway on Friday, September 25, with Kannur Warriors welcoming Thrissur Magic FC in Kannur. The opening fixture is a repeat of last season’s grand finale, in which Kannur Warriors edged 1-0 to lift the title. As in the previous two editions, six teams will compete in a home-and-away league format, with the top four advancing to the semi-finals before the grand finale.
However, there are a few changes as well: a draw in the league matches will lead to a penalty shootout, with the winning team earning two points and the losing team one. Additionally, the semifinals will be played in a home-and-away format, and the league toppers will be awarded the Winners' Shield.
Head-to-head Record: Kannur boast an unbeaten record against Thrissur Magic in the competition, winning four of their five matches with one draw.
Teams Preview
Kannur Warriors FC Preview
Kannur Warriors enter the new season as defending champions and the only team to have reached the semi-finals in both previous editions. Their title-winning campaign was far from straightforward, as they only just scraped into the last four before finding their best form when it mattered, eliminating defending champions Calicut and beating Thrissur in the final, both with clean sheets. That was particularly impressive given they had conceded more goals than they scored during the group stage.
There have been changes at the helm, with Andrey Chernyshov replacing Manuel Sanchez Muria. The Russian brings plenty of experience, having previously managed Mohammedan SC and guided them to the I-League title in 2023-24.
Meanwhile, Kannur have largely retained their core of the squad from last season, while adding quality, with Nijo Gilbert and Umashankar M among the notable domestic recruits, while Bari Alvarez, Gerrad Artigas, Muhammed Mushraf and Fredrick Ansah Botchway strengthen the overseas contingent.
Key Players
Muhammad Sinan was Kannur Warriors’ creative force last season, topping the league for chances created (16) while registering four goals and two assists. Asier Gomes chipped in with three goals including the winner in the final, while Manoj Swamy Kannan impressed with his defensive work, particularly his tackles and interceptions.
Kannur Warriors FC Probable XI - Ubaid C.K (GK); Aswinkumar T K, Pawan Kumar, Vikas Saini, Manoj Kannan, Pragyan Sundar Gogoi, Frederick Ansah Botchway, Asier Gome, Adrián Sardinero, Bogdan Stamenkovic, Muhammed Sinan
Thrissur Magic FC Preview
Thrissur Magic may have fallen at the final hurdle last season, but they were arguably the competition’s biggest improvers after finishing bottom in the inaugural edition. They jumped from just five points in season one to 17 points and a second-place finish in the group stage, with their defence playing a key role.
They conceded only seven goals in the group stage, the fewest in the league, but struggled at the other end, scoring just eight, also the lowest tally in the competition. That said they did score three in the semi-final against Malappuram, improving their attacking output will be a major task for the head coach.
Speaking of which, like Kannur, Thrissur have also made a change in the dugout, appointing a Spaniard with coaching experience in South America and Europe, but no previous exposure to the Indian subcontinent. His biggest challenge could be finding more firepower from a side that already boasts a strong defensive foundation.
Thrissur have also added local talents Basith PT, Mushraf, Abdul Samad PP and Niyaj K, Sandeep, while Sergio Gil, who has experience in La Liga 2, and Henry Palzas adds quality to the overseas contingent.
Key Players
For Thrissur, much of the focus will once again be on their defensive trio of Bibin Ajayan, Mailson Alves and Lenny Rodrigues. The experienced Rodrigues leads the backline and ranks among the team’s top tacklers, while Ajayan and Alves also made their mark at the other end. Ajayan provided the most assists for the club last season, while Alves was a constant threat in the box, finishing as the joint-top scorer alongside Marcus Jr Joseph.
Thrissur Magic Probable XI - Laxmikant Kattimani (GK) ; Alan John, Mailson Alves, Bibin Ajayan, Tejas Krishna, Lenny Rodrigues, Francis Nuer Addo, Ivan Marković, Faisal Ali, Marcus Joseph, Mohamed Afsal
KANNUR WARRIORS FC vs THRISSUR MAGIC FC
Winning PredictionKannur Warriors’ status as defending champions and their strong record against Thrissur should give them plenty of confidence, especially after winning their last two meetings without conceding.
However, Thrissur were tough to beat at home last season, suffering just one defeat, which came against Kannur in the final. Interestingly, the corresponding league fixture ended 1-1. With this being the season opener, both sides could take a cautious approach, making a closely fought draw a plausible outcome.
