Pakistan vs India Match Prediction & Analysis
The 15th edition of the SAFF Championship kicks off on Thursday in Bangladesh, with six teams divided into two groups competing for the title. The tournament will follow a single round-robin format, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semifinals before the championship final on November 17, 2026.
Defending champions India will get the competition underway, facing their arch-rivals in what promises to be an intriguing opening fixture.
Head-to-Head Record: India and Pakistan have met 29 times on the international circuit. India have won 16 matches, Pakistan four, and nine games ended in a draw.
Teams Preview
Pakistan Preview
Pakistan will be looking to improve on their disappointing 2023 campaign, when they were eliminated in the group stage. They are yet to win the SAFF Championship, with a third-place finish in 1997 remaining their best achievement.
Their 2018 semifinal appearance was the last time they made a significant impact in the competition. Nolberto Solano will take charge of the side as head coach.
Ranked 197th in the world, Pakistan may not appear to be a major threat to India on paper, but they should not be underestimated. Like India, they are also dealing with player availability issues, with only two of their six Europe-based players, Mkeal Aroon Abdullah and Umar Nawaz, expected to feature against India. Umar Nawaz, in particular, is one to watch, having developed his game in England through the youth academies of clubs such as Wolves and Wrexham.
Pakistan also showed glimpses of their potential at the ASEAN tournament, where they held the Philippines, ranked 63 places above them, to a draw. That result serves as a reminder that Pakistan cannot be taken lightly, despite the gap in FIFA rankings.
Pakistan Probable Starting Lineup
Yousef Butt (GK); Haris Ali Zeb, Abdullah Iqbal, Easah Suliman, Mohib Ullah, Abdul Rehman, M. Hayyaan Khattak, Alamgir Ghazi, Alamgir Ali Khan, Umar Nawaz, Kaleemullah Khan
India Preview
India will begin their title defence against arch-rivals Pakistan, hoping to replicate their impressive start to the 2023 edition. The Blue Tigers lifted the trophy that year after beating Kuwait in the final, finishing the tournament unbeaten on home soil. Interestingly, they also opened that campaign against Pakistan, registering a convincing 4-0 victory. They will be hoping for a similar result this time around.
Meanwhile, the AIFF has opted to send an U-23 squad for the SAFF Championship, with the senior men's team scheduled to play friendlies against New Zealand during the same period.
Noushad Moosa will take charge of the squad, but faces an immediate challenge with only 18 of the 28 selected players initially available for the opener due to staggered releases from ISL clubs ahead of the November 9 international window. The full squad is expected to be available by November 11, ahead of their meeting with the Maldives.
As for the squad, there are several players worth keeping an eye on, including Punjab FC's impressive Muhammad Suhail, Noufal PN, Suhail Ahmad Bhat, Abdul Rabeeh and Manglenthang Kipgen. Many of them are regulars at club level and will be eager to make their mark on the international stage.
They will also have the benefit of experienced campaigners such as Liston Colaco, Suresh Singh Wangjam, Farukh Choudhary and Chinglensana Singh Konsham, who bring valuable senior international experience to the squad.
India Probable Starting Lineup
Priyansh (GK); Hmingthanmawia Ralte, Bijoy Varghese, Nikhil Prabhu, Muhammed Uvais, Macarton Louis, Ricky Shabong, Ebindas Noufal PN, Muhammad Suhail, Suhail Bhat
PAKISTAN vs INDIA
Winning PredictionDespite fielding what is essentially an U-23 side, India will enter the competition as favourites, with most of their players having gained valuable match practice in domestic competitions. They also boast a dominant record against Pakistan in the SAFF Championship, winning seven of their nine meetings, including a convincing 4-0 victory in their last encounter.
However, India may not be entirely up to speed, as this group of players has had little time to build chemistry, with limited preparation ahead of the tournament. That could make the opener more challenging than expected. Nevertheless, given the difference in quality and India's superior head-to-head record, we fancy the defending champions to begin their title defence with a win.
